For Primero Mining, one of their mine’s profitability was stifled by the inability to achieve their production targets. The mine was in good condition, but the price of gold was going down. They needed to increase the production to offset the drop of gold prices. After some analysis, they found that more than 70% of the time, production plans were disrupted by equipment problems.
A maintenance team was formed to improve reliability, minimize down time, and thus increase throughput in mine operations. But the mine is a big place and they had no visibility or organization of the complex tasks they had to tackle. They needed better coordination of the many dispersed maintenance teams so they could focus on the most important jobs.
The Primero team implemented the Basic Collaboration level of the Project Execution Maturity Model within the Electrical and and Mine Services departments, focusing on improving workflow, then used VISUM to anchor those processes, facilitating collaboration across geographically dispersed teams.
Using VISUM, they developed a Visual Project Board that made it easier for the team to manage the work and changing priorities to manage over 50+ projects. They implemented a regular collaboration meeting to go through the work and prepare daily action plans. The visualization of the work in progress helped them plan ahead and move teams to the areas most needing support. The easy identification of workflow bottlenecks also helped them manage their staffing levels and set the right priorities for the work to be done.
Maintenance Team Productivity increased 110% and 209% for the two teams, while time to respond was reduced by 41%
Cycle time reduction of 41%
Improved company-wide visibility of work flow
Standardized team collaboration sharing focused information
Improved teamwork and alignment
